I found an extremely detailed analysis of a Clifford Brown solo transcription at http://www.jazzpiano.co.nz/documents/clifford-brown-trans-analysis.pdf.
The Complete Transcription Process
Check out Dave Liebman's article on the transcription process. We are using some of the steps from this. Can you find out which ones?

Homework from class #1
Practice singing along with the melody of "Blue Bossa."
Please write the scale number under each note of the melody and trumpet solo. For example, the first note of the melody is 5 (the bass note is C and the melody note is G).
Please download Arthur Lynn White's dissertation about Joe Henderson at http://www.scribd.com/doc/78085302/JOE-HENDERSON-Dissertation and read the Biography section.
Listen to music you like this week and see if the melody has steps and skips. Does it follow the "rule" of changing direction after a skip?
